It is Spring now, time to put back those heavy winter shoes in the boxes on high racks. And hello sneakers, flats, and heels. When our light-weighted shoes are out, there’s that unavoidable dusty, mushy, funky odor that came along with it. Yakkss. After months of hiding in the dark cool corner, it is time to get them some sunbathe and of course some lovely smell from essential oil. So this shoe deodorizing powder came in handy for this smelly task.
Jump to RecipeYou will need some unwanted clean socks to complete your deodorizing task. Why? It is because you will not want to shake off those powders each time you are going wear your shoes. By making them into a pouch, you could remove them easily and place them back whenever you are not wearing your shoes. Don’t bother to buy new socks for this. Ever wondered why you always ended up having some single socks not knowing where the other one could be? I believed that they just disappeared into the socks dimension where all the single socks of the universe gather together happily after ditching their other half. Well, the one left behind came in handy for this DIY hack. Winks winks.
Ingredients of homemade shoe deodorizing powder
This homemade shoe deodorizing powder recipe needs one part of sodium bicarbonate and one part of cornstarch. Sodium bicarbonate is a wonderful household staple. As it is so robust and all-rounded. It could be used for pretty much every household cleaning task. Its function in this shoe deodorizing powder is to eliminate the odor. Corn starch, not dissimilar to baking soda, is finely ground, helping to make it super absorbent. This makes it great for attacking unpleasant odors, especially from stinky shoes. Please feel free to size down or size up the recipe according to the usage. Essential oils in the recipe are not just for fragrance purposes. Eucalyptus and peppermint essential oil give that lovely fresh herby scent and at the same time complements the disinfection task of sodium bicarbonate and cornstarch. You can opt it out if you don’t have them. But I strongly recommend you give them a try.
List of ingredients
- Sodium bicarbonate
- Cornstarch
- Peppermint essential oil
- Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil or Eucalyptus Globulus essential oil or any Eucalyptus essential oil that you have

Useful Tips
In case you really don’t have clean socks to spare for this DIY hack, you can also get yourself a nice sprinkle glass jar. This glass jar helps to sprinkle a thin layer of deodorizing powder evenly on your shoe soles without overdoing it. That way you don’t need to shake them off before you wear your shoes every time. You can get them from a local supermarket or Amazon. Another useful hack is to put the deodorizing powder in a small coffee filter bag in a sachet form. They are very handy for this DIY project, as they can be removed easily from the shoes and replaced as we needed.
- Sprinkle glass jar or empty spice jar
- coffee filter bag
