I am done with making single-use body scrub. I would like to formulate a non-greasy foaming gentle body scrub! So I already have homemade coco-cocoa body butter, to go along with it, I might as well continue with the coco-cocoa theme. Inspired by the body shop coconut body scrub, I formulated this foaming coco-cocoa body scrub and it is officially my new favourite scrub, it makes skin-exfoliating a fun activity to do, not just another boring skincare routine because it foams!
Ingredients
The magic ingredient that makes my body scrub foams is SLSa. It is derived from coconut and palm oils and is classified as a safe skin-friendly surfactant for both skin and hair because of its large molecular structure. This mild plant-derived surfactant creates a lather that effectively removes surface oil, dirt, and bacteria, without stripping or drying sensitive skin. Get it here [ US / Europe ]
Emollients
It is not for no reason that this body scrub is called coco-cocoa body scrub, as I have chosen the unrefined cocoa butter and fractionated coconut oil as an emollient. These oils are easy to absorb and yet not greasy, leaving your skin plump and moist as you rinse off. It is for once, rinsing off with hot water is not so drying and stripping to your skin. These natural botanical oils are the perfect emollient to prevent that from happening.

I have added also cetyl alcohol to function as an emulsifier in the recipe as well as an emollient. The oil-loving end of the Cetyl alcohol will clean your pores while the water-loving end of it will bind with water as you rinse, turning this scrub into a milky liquid. Get it here [ US / Europe ]

Exfoliants
The two exfoliants that I have included in my recipe are walnut shell powder and desiccated coconut. They are the gentler options of natural exfoliants for your body. It scrubs the dry skins but doesn’t tear off your delicate skin tissues. Get walnut shell powder here [ US / Europe ], organic desiccated coconut [ US / Europe ]
Fragrance
These are the oils that I recommended that go along with the body scrub. But do scent it as you want, the options are almost limitless!

Directions
- Measure and transfer all the ingredients of phase A in a double-boiler. Warm it over a barely-simmering water bath. Stir until the cetyl alcohol is totally melted and combined with all other oily ingredients.
- In the meantime, measure all the other phase B additives into a small prep bowl.
- Remove the double boiler from the water bath, slowly pour in phase B ingredients into the double boiler. Stir to combine.
- Decant it to your packaging. Voila, it’s done!
- To use: Use it as you would like as any other scrubs. For best result, do it after a body washes, take a handful of scrub, scrub it all over your body and rinse off.
Notes & Substitution
- This scrub is an anhydrous product, meaning no water content, however, due to the nature of how we use it, we will introduce moisture content during the shower each time we scoop it with our wet barehand. So I have included a preservative for preventing mold or any bacteria from growing. You can opt it out if you scoop out a portion in your usual DIY Mask bowl and use it in a shower. By opting it out, you can shift the 1% to cocoa butter.
- For the lack of scent, you can use refined cocoa butter in place of unrefined cocoa butter.
- It is a coco-cocoa theme body scrub, I don’t have any recommendations as a substitution for these oils.
- Essential oils are totally optional as the scrub itself has the mild scent of coconut and cocoa. You will just need to shift the 1% of fragrance to more cocoa butter instead.
- I had included vitamin E to extend the shelf life of the body scrub, but you can opt it out if you can finish it within 3 months. (why 3 months? that’s my best guess of the shelf life of this homemade body scrub)
- It can be double-used as a facial scrub too if you find it not too scrubby for your skin.
This coco-cocoa body scrub promotes summer tropical vibes, so relaxing and your skin will definitely love it, as it leaves it plump and clean! I especially like the lightweight feeling on my skin after skin exfoliation. I hope you will like it too.
