I love eucalyptus essential oil. Any type of Eucalyptus essential oil. They have that lovely herby scent, so refreshing and so healing for me. More on this therapeutic essential oil will be cover on my monthly all about oils talk. Today we are going to make this lovely eucalyptus mint foot salve.
So what is a salve? It is an ointment used to promote healing of the skin or as protection. A salve is thicker than most hand lotions or creams. It uses beeswax and botanic butter to create a thick emollient, which moisturizes the skin. As the weather gets warmer, I don’t need to wear socks to sleep anymore, which means I have to be careful with my oily foot balm as they will stain my bed. This foot salve that I am going to show you is non-greasy and penetrates the skin easily compare to a balm and butter. Let’s look into the ingredients.
Ingredients of Eucalyptus Mint foot salve
This eucalyptus mint foot salve contains, of course, peppermint essential oil and eucalyptus globulus essential oil. Because the main chemical components of Eucalyptus oil are eucalyptol and alpha-terpineol, this essential oil has a soothing, cooling vapor. These effects make Eucalyptus ideal for a soothing massage. Peppermint essential oil has the properties to cleanse and rejuvenate skin. It gives that cool minty touch to the foot salve.
Apart from that, it has also mango butter, shea butter, cornstarch, avocado oil, and antioxidant vitamin E. Shea butter and mango butter are the nutritious creamy base of the foot salve. We need cornstarch to create that non-greasy finish of the salve. Avocado oil is perfect for dry chapped skin. I found that my heels are dried almost all year round, it cracked in the winter. Avocado oil is really really nourishing, it helps to heal and nourish the skin. And finally, because this foot salve is 100% oil-based, we don’t need a broad spectrum of preservatives, however in this recipe I included vitamin E as an antioxidant to give a longer shelf life for this salve. Below is my foot salve formulation:
- 20% Shea Butter (Phase A)
- 25% Mango Butter (Phase A)
- 10% Cornstarch (Phase A)
- 41% Avocado Oil (Phase B)
- 0.5% Vitamin E (Phase B)
- 2.75% Peppermint Essential Oil (Phase B)
- 0.75% Eucalyptus Essential Oil (Phase B)

As usual, the product formulation is given for you to scale up or down according to your needs.
Ingredients
25g Mango Butter
20g Shea Butter
10g Cornstarch
41g Avocado Oil
0.5g Vitamin E
2.75g Peppermint Essential Oil
0.75g Eucalyptus Dives Essential Oil
Directions
- WeighĀ the phase A ingredients into aĀ double boiler. Place the double boiler in your prepared water bath to melt everything through.
- While the heated phase is melting, weigh the Phase B ingredients into a small beaker or dish.
- Prepare an ice bath in a bowl that will accommodate your double boilerāyouāll want a handful of ice cubes and some cold water.
- Once the phase A ingredients have melted remove the measuring cup from the hot water bath and place it in the ice bath. Stir constantly with aĀ flexible silicone spatula, being sure to scrape down the sides frequently. After a minute, stir in the phase B ingredients.
- Continue stirring the mixture in the ice bath until you reach ātraceāāthe mixture should have enough viscosity that a small amount drizzled over the surface of the mixture leaves a ātraceā for an instant. If in doubt, stir and chill longer, giving it more time to obviously thicken up, otherwise it may not set up properly.
- At that point pour the mixture into aĀ 100mL tin. Leave it to set up for at least an hour before usingāit should appear solid. The set-up time will vary depending on ambient temperature (if youāre somewhere quite hot, popping it in the fridge would be a good idea).
Notes
- Avocado oil can be replaced by other light-weighted carrier oil, such as jojoba oil, almond oil, sunflower seed oil, etc
- Cornstarch can be replaced by arrowroot starch
- This is an only oil product, so it is not microbes-friendly. It can store for up to a year.
And voila, enjoy this eucalyptus mint foot salve as you need, your feet deserve it.
