Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, I started to pick up yoga again. At first, I was a bit intimidated by my flexibility due to a lack of practice over the years. And most probably also because it was just 6 months after my postpartum. It was my first-time pregnancy, it wasn’t easy at all as I was told that my baby was grown too big for my size. And that results in 33 hours of the delivery process. I had 3 degrees tear and an over-stretched perineal muscle in the end. So long story short, one of the reasons why I got back to yoga again was also to re-train my perineal muscle.
I started by 2 times a week with 10 minutes each session and slowly increased to 3 times a week with 15 minutes each session. And finally, when they eased the lockdown restrictions, I was able to practice yoga on daily basis for 20 minutes each time. And that was about 3 to 4 months of progress. Yoga helps me to regain my body strength and teaches me to control my muscles that I didn’t know that I could control.
Jump to RecipeWhy do you need to clean your yoga mat?
Well, I got to admit one thing. It didn’t get into my mind that I needed to clean my yoga mat when I started to pick up yoga again. Especially when I didn’t use it often enough at the very beginning. Until one day it got that funky smell on it. I had a quick check online, only to found that store-bought yoga mat cleaner is an expensive solution for me.
Whether you are a yoga beginner like me or a yoga master, itās important to clean your yoga mat after each use. Yoga mats absorb a lot ā your sweat, oils, and dirt from the floor. Leaving your mat unwashed may lead to mustiness, mold, and dirt build-up. It is thus important to clean your yoga mat each time after use.
There are just way too many ways to DIY one, and not only that it saves money, but it is also an all-natural ingredient spray. Meaning that during your yoga session, you don’t need to inhale that left-over scent of industry-made spray full of awful chemical to your body. The smell of the spray actually stays and it also does settle my mood at the same time.

About Cost Savings…
This bottle of homemade Yoga Mat Spray is definitely cheaper than a store-bought one. Let me break it down for you. In where I am living, the closest sports accessories shop is Decathlon, and the cheapest Yoga Mat Spray is 5ā¬ for 100mL which is 50ā¬ per little. It contains water, ethanol, PEG40 castor oil, tea tree essential oil, orange essential oil, lavender essential oil, and preservatives. Compare to our DIY bottle just the liquid itself, it is only 3.67ā¬ for 500ml, which is 1.84ā¬ per little. And it contains only all-natural ingredients. So for me, DIY solution is a definitely better solution.

Notes
- The beauty of the recipe is that you don’t need to have all that essential oils to make one, if you don’t have one of them, just need to top up the other one more with the same dose.
- This bottle of spray is good for 6 months or more.
- You might notice there are no emulsifiers in this spray. The alcohol helps dissolve the essential oils a bit, and when you give the bottle a brisk shake before spritzing, it works well enough without the solubilizer.
