I guess it’s all down to habit preferences when it comes to cleaning products. Thanks to the commercial cleaning products, we love how our shampoos and toothpaste lather beautifully. But lather comes from a foaming agent like a surfactant. And not all surfactant is environmentally friendly. And one thing we should also know is that, when a cleaning product doesn’t foam or doesn’t lather as much as you would like, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t clean well. Today’s whitening tooth powder recipe falls into this category – it doesn’t lather and foam but it cleans as well as conventional toothpaste. As promised in my post- Homemade Anti-Plaque Toothpaste, I will come out with a recipe without SLS, and voila here it is, let’s look into it.
Ingredients of Whitening Tooth Powder
Kaolin Clay
Kaolin is natural, white clay, and just so happens to be one of Earth’s most abundant minerals. It acts as a safe, effective cleaning and polishing agent. Rich in minerals and natural bleaching agents, kaolin clay can give you a whiter smile. Due to its antibacterial properties, it also reduces or eliminates bad breath, prevents cavities, and boosts oral health. The calcium, zinc, and magnesium in kaolin clay will strengthen your teeth naturally [source].

Activated Carbon Powder
For the hype of using activated carbon powder as a tooth whitening agent, I had also included a small amount of it in my formulation. I haven’t used this tooth powder long enough to see the significant result, however, I found this interesting article about a user’s tooth whitening experience with activated carbon powder.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is the only liquid ingredient in the recipe to help to combine all the ingredients. To avoid clumps, please whisk agressively during mixing.
Sodium bicarbonate
According to this study, sodium bicarbonate is efficient in tooth-whitening. I have formulated for about 34% in this recipe, which is efficient for tooth cleaning.
Zinc Citrate
Zinc citrate is an active ingredient that helps to fight of plaque efficiently. Study shows that 2% of citrate in a toothpaste formulation leads to a significant reduction in plaque growth[source].
