I started to put oils on my face ever since I opted for a more natural way of taking care of my skin. If you tell me you are putting oils on your skin 2 years ago, I would be like what? no way?! Aren’t we supposed to not do that to avoid creating oiliness on our faces? On the contrary to what we believe, oil is actually good for our facial skin tissues.
In the year 1929 scientists found fat-free diets caused the skin to become dry, scaly, red, and irritated. As soon as fat was returned to the diet skin could become smooth, hydrated, and supple. It was the beginning of discovery. Skin needs fats ā and some of these fats cannot be made by the human body. They need to be eaten or applied directly to the skin. The most important fat in this equation is now known as linoleic acid. An omega 6 oil, was once called vitamin F, but today is called an essential fatty acid. Essential because your body cannot make linoleic acid but instead must be given it.

That pretty much summarizes why we should put oils on our faces. Today we are going to DIY anti-aging facial serum. Facial serum by definition skincare product you can apply to your skin after cleansing but before moisturizing with the intent of delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin. It is a liquid that contains a very high concentration of active ingredients that can penetrate deeply into the skin. This lightweight oil-based cranberry rose facial serum formulated by me has everything to be qualified as an anti-aging serum.
Ingredients For DIY anti-aging facial serum
This oil-based facial serum stars 2 lovely ingredients that I love so much, they are cranberry seed oil and rosehip seed oil. You probably already a fan of cranberry, you drink cranberry juice because of its yummy taste and antioxidant properties. But do you know that this wonderful fruit produce also oil? Cranberry seed oil is obtained by cold-pressing from the seeds of cranberries. It contains a high amount of omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids, as well as tocopherols, tocotrienols, which makes it an antioxidant powerhouse [source].
Rosehip seed oil also named rosehip oil, extracted from the seeds of the wild rose bush Rosa rubiginosa (Spanish: rosa mosqueta) in the southern Andes. It can also be extracted from Rosa canina, which grows in many regions of the world including South Africa and Europe. It is high in the essential fatty acids: linoleic acid or omega-6, and Ī±-linolenic acid or omega-3 [ source ]
Together with cranberry seed oil and rosehip seed oil, our anti-aging facial serum contains also olive squalane (this article from simpleskincare summarized how this amazing oil is perfect for skincare), sweet almond oil, sweet orange essential oil for the fragrance, and vitamin E.
As you age, your skin produces less oil, which means you get dried out more easily. This, for many women, exaggerates the look of wrinkles. The components of this DIY anti-aging facial serum are great for targeting specific skincare concerns, like wrinkles. Goodbye, signs of aging!

4.1g Rosehip Seed Oil
6.62g Sweet Almond Oil
Directions
- WeighĀ all the ingredients into a small beaker, or directly into the bottle you plan on storing the serum in. Stir (or cap and shake) to combine. Transfer to a bottle (if you didnāt start there) and youāre done! A 30ml dropping bottle is a good fit for this batch size. Thatās it!
- To use, massage a few drops into your face before you apply your facial moisturiser.
Notes
- Because this serum is 100% oil-based, it does not require aĀ broad-spectrum preservativeĀ (broad spectrum preservatives ward off microbial growth, and microbes require water to liveāno water, no microbes!). Kept reasonably cool and dry, it should last at least a year before any of the oils go rancid. If you notice it starts to smell like old nuts or crayons, thatās a sign that the oils have begun to oxidize; chuck it out and make a fresh batch if that happens.
- Rosehip seed oil can be replaced by evening primrose oil
- Sweet almond oil can be replace by others lightweighted carrier oils like jojoba oil, grapeseed oil and etc.
- Sweet orange essential oil can be replace by essential oil of your choice. One that has the properties and scent you prefer for your skincare. I found that the scent of sweet orange eo is very calming and it blends well with the scent of cranberry seed oil.
This recipe requires no heating and you need only 5 minutes to create this anti-aging facial serum, and it will be the most worthy 5 minutes you have ever spent for skincare. The finishing colour is shiny golden, it absorbs and penetrates very well to the skin, leaving it plump and moisturised. Thanks to the cranberry seed oil, rosehip seed oil, and sweet orange essential oil, it smells divine. I bet you will love it as much as I do!
Cheers for the fresh, younger-looking skin!
