Throughout my adult life, I always struggle to find only natural ingredients skincare products for my skin. Especially from the pregnancy until the delivery of my baby, the hormone in my body is like a yoyo. There was a moment during my breastfeeding journey when my period starts to come back again, I have this skin allergic reaction. And then I finally learned that it was due to hormone allergy. I didn’t know that one day I could have an allergic reaction to my own hormone.
And then I discover this natural path to DIY my own skincare. Throughout my journey, I discover a list of benefits of why you should make your own skincare products. I hope my experience inspired you as well.
Everyone has a particular type of skin, so DIY projects are perfect for customizing your skincare
Beauty isnāt one-size-fits-all, but unique to every individual and deeply personal. Only you yourself know your skin type very well, that includes what ingredients are irritant to your skin, what are pore-clogging and etc. A skincare product that fits my combination skin doesn’t mean that it will fit my friend’s sensitive skin.
Your skin is the largest organ in your body. Taking care of it gives you a great health boost. Not only that having healthy skin makes you look better but also gives you a confidence boost in many ways of your life.

your DIY product is all-natural and chemically free
Sometimes, you just canāt beat nature. My own personal experiences have shown me that the products I made for myself were a better fit as it contains only natural products.
Many commercial beauty products claim the benefits of botanical ingredients like essential oil, argan oil, almond oil, or green tea extract on their packaging and advertising ā yet the actual amount of these ingredients in the product is minimal. When youāre able to purchase your own oils and control the amount present in your products, you can be sure that youāre getting the full benefits that nature intended.

you have 100% control of your skincare ingredients
The chemical formaldehyde is hiding in many places in your home, from air fresheners and cleaning products to cosmetics, soaps, shampoos, and lotions. Unfortunately, it’s hard to tell whether you’re exposing yourself due to all the different names on product labels, but it’s worth taking the extra time to be carefulāespecially since it’s been found to be carcinogenic to humans.
During your DIY project, you get to select all the raw ingredients to make your own skincare products. That being said, you are totally in charge of all the skincare ingredients. No more ‘ots’, ‘its’, ‘ets’, you can pronounce all your natural ingredients. Therefore, by making your own beauty products, you are in 100% control of the ingredients.
our planet will thank you for producing less cosmetic waste
Do you know that every year, thousands of tonnes of microplastics wash down our drains into the environment? Plastic is an enormous environmental issue when it comes to our beauty and care products. Whether it is about plastic packaging or microplastic ingredients, they contribute to the increasing plastic pollution problem we face today.
Annually, the beauty industry produces more than 120 BILLION units of packaging globally. Only 9% of all plastic waste ever produced has been recycled, and about 12% incinerated and all the rest ā 79% ā ended up in landfills, dumps, or the natural environment. When it comes to beauty packaging, 95% of it is thrown out after just one use, and only 14% of plastic makes it to a recycling center.
–“Beat the microbead”
Considering these figures, you can imagine what might be happening to the packaging of your personal care and beauty products.
Plastic lasts forever. All plastic ever made still exists in some form. Figures like this bring out the urgency to focus on the consequences of plastic we use. Many of them ended up in the landfill and eventually the sea which is where the seafood we consumed comes from.
Aside from cosmetic plastic waste, do you know that industry-made cosmetics contribute to water pollution as well? Years of engineering practice as an environmental process engineer taught me that the wastewater generates by the cosmetic industry has one of the highest degrees of non-biodegradable component. You probably don’t know that cosmetic products that are produced from factories of under-developed countries often don’t have a water treatment system? This means that after each batch of cosmetic production, they wash and flush down the remaining mixture in the mixing tank to our river system directly. Yaks!

it is a big cost saving
Iām on a journey to ditch store-bought products and swap them for homemade, high-quality alternatives.Ā One of my main reason for making my own beauty product is I can re-create a lot of store-bought beauty products for just a fraction of the price.
If you have a big family like me, it is a big budget when it comes to Christmas gifts each year. Natural skincare products also make cost-effective, cute, and thoughtful gifts. We could design our own treatments with your loved oneās skincare needs in mind and then package them in something pretty, like a decorative jar or cute labeled craft bag.

you empower your creativeness
By creating your own DIY beauty products, you will discover that your creativeness in your DIY projects is endless! You get to decide the fragrance and texture for each of your DIY creations.
Life is like a science experiment. The practice of researching, sourcing ingredients, and creating something new with my own hands is both calming and empowering.
In a way, I see making my own skincare products as both an art and a science. Itās like cooking or painting which allows me to express myself through the creation of something new.
Creating my own products involves experimentation, tweaks, and a few failures ā but once I achieve my final product, Iām proud of what Iāve made. Each time I create a product, I get an idea for how to improve it even further in the next round ā maybe through adjusting an ingredient to make it creamier, trying a new scent, or incorporating an ingredient with a new benefit.
Final thoughts…
The beauty industry generates a lot of plastic waste but can it be changed? Definitely yes! By making our own beauty products, we could avoid creating more plastic waste.
Lastly, I hope this list of benefits āwhy you should make your own beauty products inspired you to embark on your own DIY skincare journey. I promise this journey is going to be empowering, fruitful, interesting, and satisfying.
