I noticed that it’s been a while that I haven’t posted any hair-related recipes. Here’s one of my all-time favorite sprays. Marching into cooler fall days, our skin becomes drier as well as our hair. I have waist-length long hair that I keep since 2019, and finally, I arrived at the point that I decided to don’t cut it anymore. But the truth is long hair is old hair, they need more care, they tend to be more fragile too as they age. Without proper hair care, they dried easily and you get split-end easier as well. That’s annoying. This recipe is specially formulated for people who have long and fragile hair like me, it requires you to just weigh-pour-shake, let’s get started.
Formulations of Biphase Hair-Repair spray
Today we are going to create a bi-phase hair spray, meaning this spray contains one-part toner, one-part serum mist. In order to keep the botanical essence of both the water and oil phase, it is purposely formulated without an emulsifier. The top layer of this hair repair spray is a blend of nourishing mustard seed oil, hair-loving botanical olive squalane, and ylang-ylang essential oil. The second component is a blend of potent actives, featuring peppermint hydrosol and pro-vitamin B5. Let’s look into each ingredient and its benefits.
Mustard Seed Oil
Mustard oil has a special fatty acid composition, it contains about 20ā28% oleic acid, 10ā12% linoleic, 9.0ā9.5% linolenic acid, and 30ā40% erucic acid [source]. This may help reduce inflammation on your skin and scalp. Using mustard oil as a scalp treatment may help protect or improve hair root health for stronger, thicker hair [source].
Panthenol B5
Provitamin B5 (synonyms: D-pantothenyl alcohol, pantothenol, dexpanthenol) is the alcohol analog of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). It acts as a moisturizer by drawing water from deeper layers of the skin into the upper layers of the skin. It helps with softness and elasticity and is anti-inflammatory. It stimulates skin regeneration and boosts healing.
In hair care it is a small enough molecule to penetrate the hair and moisturize it, helping increase elasticity/reduce breakage. It makes hair softer and shinier and reduces static.
My other recipe calling for Panthenol B5
Peppermint Hydrosol
A cooling refreshing and uplifting distillate, peppermint hydrosol is a must to have during summertime. It has instant skin freshening properties and is good for treating sunburns, inflammatory skin conditions, and even boost hair growth.
DIY recipes using peppermint hydrosol:
Olive Squalane
Olive Squalane acts as a great conditioner while helping to restore any lost lubrication on the scalp. It softens hair texture and adds shine without making the hair strands greasy.

Notes
- If you work on pro-vitamin B5 in powder form, please note that after diluted, it is slightly alkaline, and you will have to dilute it with citric acid or lactic acid to pH5.5. My liquid Pro-vitamin B5 was bought from a DIY supplier that already adjusted the pH. Therefore, I don’t need to adjust the pH, which means I have no idea how much citric acid or lactic acid is needed for the pH adjustment. I would recommend making a masterbatch of liquid pro-vitamin B5 for future formulations.
- Peppermint Hydrosol can be replaced by rosemary hydrosol for the same benefits.
- Ylang-ylang essential oil can be substituted by the essential oil of your choice.
- Check on preamble where to buy these ingredients.
Like oil and vinegar, bi-phase products house two separate formulas that when shaken together can work magic. This biphase hair repair spray is a life-saver for hair loss and hair breakage. For the best result, I would prefer to leave this hair spray overnight before your next hair wash session. I see the result of lesser hair loss within a week of using this hair spray.
This biphase hair spray contains all the hair-loving botanicals that help to repair and nourish your hair from scalp to hair end. No heating is required to keep active ingredients as it is. All you need to do is just shake it up, spritz it on, and get ready to glow.
