Living in a 4 seasons country makes me appreciate summer. Something I never thought I would say before I moved to France. As Malaysians, we don’t always like sunny days as we have it all year long. I didn’t know it could be so precious one day for me. As much as I love summer to enjoy the sunshine, sea, and beach, summer can be a pain in the ass sometimes especially when the heatwave arrives.
Sometimes summer here in Europe can be so dry and scorchingly hot, it is unbearable. We thought that someone who comes from a tropical country will endure the heat easier, turns out not so much. The heat in Malaysia is more of humid heat, it makes you sticky as you sweat but it is bearable somehow. The heat in the summer here in France is dry, the air is dry, it could be worst when there’s no wind. Some days I feel like I am burning inside out as if there’s a fire inside me eating me alive. While a fan or an aircon does a good job of cooling us down, mentally calm and inner serenity plays an important role as well. Aromatherapy is one of my favourite ways to cool myself down. These refreshing summer diffuser blends are my favourite recipes for the summer.
The Science behind cooling essential oil
The 3 essential oils that can give us a cooling sensation are eucalyptus essential oil, peppermint essential oil, and spearmint essential oil. It is the main chemical constituents in these oils that give our olfactory a refreshing and cooling sensation.
Peppermint Essential Oil
- Botanical Name: Mentha piperita
- Main Constituents: L-Menthol: 28 – 50%, Menthone: 18 – 30%
- Aromatic Summary / Note / Strength of Aroma: A top note with a strong aroma, Peppermint has a sharp, penetrating scent based on its high menthol content. The minty sweetness of the vapor makes it one of the most popular Essential Oils.
- Blendswith: Basil, Bergamot, Cajeput, Cedarwood, Eucalyptus, Lemon, Lime, Mandarin, Marjoram, Niaouli, Pine, Rosemary, Spearmint and Thyme.
Spearmint Essential Oil
- Botanical Name: Mentha spicata
- Main Constituents: L-carvone: 55 – 60%
- Aromatic Summary / Note / Strength of Aroma: A top note with a medium aroma, Spearmint has a fresh minty smell reminiscent of Peppermint that is sweeter, and not so sharp.
- Blends With: Basil, Birch Sweet, Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Jasmine, Lavender and Rosemary.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
I had previously made an entry to discuss Types of Eucalyptus and Uses. So here I will only speak about the main constituent composition in each type of Eucalyptus. 1,8 Cineole is the chemical compound that gives us a refreshing and soothing feeling.
EUCALYPTUS VARIETIES 1,8 Cineole | USES |
---|---|
Eucalyptus Blue Mallee ~87.4% Eucalyptus Blue Mallee (Organic)~81.9% Eucalyptus Globulus 80/85% >80% Eucalyptus Smithii ~80% Eucalyptus Radiata (Organic)~71.3% Eucalyptus Radiata ~69.41% Eucalyptus Camaldulensis (Red)~69% Eucalyptus Globulus (Organic)~60.7% | Great when diffused to freshen the air and provides comfort when dealing with congestion. Can be used topically (diluted) for its soothing properties. The variety’s highest 1,8 cineole content will generally offer the most robust camphoraceous (medicinal-like) scent and therapeutic effects. Essential Oils high in 1, 8 cineole are not recommended for use around young children. |
Based on the same theory, I have previously created a heatwave air-cooling mint spray for the summer too. It is an air-conditioning in a bottle. You will definitely need to add that to your summer DIY list.

- Follow the volume proposed on each recipe above of each essential oil and drips them into an amber glass dropper bottle to prepare a master blend.
- Mix and shake the bottle. And that’s it! I found that the smell of the master blends are more intense the next day as they blended better as time pass.
- To Use:Â Add 1-3 drops of one of the below master blends to your diffuser. Every diffuser is different, so refer to the manufacturer’s instructions that came with your diffuser to know how many drops are appropriate to add to your particular diffuser.Â
Final thoughts
Two of my two favorite essential oils to use on unbearably hot days (or anytime that I’m feeling uncomfortably warm) are Peppermint Oil and Eucalyptus Oil. They help me to stay calm and cool while the weather is intensely warm and hot. These oils, however, are really potent, so it’s important to use them sparingly, dilute them adequately for any topical applications, follow all safety guidelines and avoid if contraindicated.
Please bear in mind that, these particular aromatherapy diffuser recipes were developed specifically for the olfactory pleasure that they provide, which means they simply smell great and refreshing! Though they may affect your mood, they weren’t formulated with specific therapeutic benefits in mind. I hope you enjoy these refreshing summer blends.
Stay calm and diffuse!
