In my older pre-DIY-beauty-product days, I used to love this coconut body butter from Body Shop so much. You feel like you are frosting yourself as you apply it generously all over your body. So creamy and so nourishing. So in this entry, we are going to make coco-cocoa body butter. This DIY project is one of the easiest beauty products we had ever made. We need only 2 major ingredients. If you feel fancy, you can add up to 5 ingredients. The starring ingredients are cocoa butter and coconut oil. When you get the unrefined versions, both retain the incredible scents of chocolate and coconut, respectively. So no fragrance needed.
Ingredients of coco-cocoa body butter
Cocoa butter is a perfect emollient that has a cocoa flavour and aroma. Its melting point is just below human body temperature. It is high in fatty acids and deeply hydrates the skin, as the fats in cocoa butter form a protective barrier to hold in moisture. It also contains oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids [source], all of which nourish the skin. This makes cocoa butter a wonderful addition to moisturizers, body lotions, and lip balms.
The second ingredient in my recipe is coconut oil. It is one of my favourite carrier oil featuring a lovely aromatic coconut scent. It is a wonderful moisturiser. From cream to soaping and cooking, there is nothing this wonderful oil can’t do!

Ingredients
1g Vitamin E [ US/ Europe] (It is optional, as the product itself has a very long shelf life already)
5 drops of Coffee essential oil / Vanilla Oleoresin Essential Oil (Totally optional, honestly)
Directions
- Weigh the cocoa butter and coconut oil as needed.
- Transfer them to a double boiler and warm them over a barely simmering water bath.
- Once the 2 ingredients are totally mixed and incorporated, removed them from heat. And cold it down over an ice water bath.
- Whisk it with a mini electronic whisk during the cool-down process. Whisk it until it reaches the texture you would like.
- Once youāre happy with the consistency, give the body butter a final whipping before lightly spooning it into your jar. As the texture is so airy and fluffed, you can pat it down into your container easily with a spatula. This body butter should last at least a year if kept cool and dry. Enjoy!
Notes & Substitution
- You can also use refined cocoa butter in place of unrefined cocoa butter. The finished product will have a less strong scent of cocoa aroma.
- You can use fractionated coconut oil in place of coconut oil. Just so you know, by replacing it, the finished product will not have the scent of coconut oil. But it is more lightweight and faster in terms of absorbance.
- Vitamin E is totally optional as the body butter itself already has a very long shelf life.
- The suggested essential oils are totally optional, but if you really wanted to add in for the fragrance, that is what I will use because it makes the body butter smells so good, so yummy, it smells almost edible. So you see where I am going, this body butter is also perfect for a sensual massage.
- TIP: If you live somewhere quite cold, you may want to add a tablespoon of liquid oil (I like jojoba or in order to fulfill the coco-cocoa theme, you can also use fractionated coconut oil) to your body butter, or you may find it too hard to easily use after a few days. You wonāt need to do this in the summer, though!
The finishing product is a fluffy airy white cream and it has that lovely subtle cocoa and coconut scent, it melts into your skin the moment you apply it. Fast absorbance and very nourishing. Some days when I ran out of facial moisturiser, I would just whip this coco-cocoa body butter as a cream because it is so easy to make. Its fast absorbance leaves your skin hydrated and moisturised! More importantly, unlike most of the homemade body butter, this one is not greasy at all! It is so simple to make and it contains only natural ingredients body butter. I hope you love it as much as I do.
