Who doesnāt love a good fizzy tablet or ābombā? From bath bombs to toilet cleaning tablets and beyond, thereās something incredibly satisfying about dropping a tablet into water and watching it fizz away as it dissolves. Today we are going to make toilet cleaning bombs that will help you to clean, descale and refresh your toilet. It is incredibly simple to make one and it gives you the same effect as the store-bought cleaning agent.
Ingredients of homemade toilet cleaning bombs
My toilet bombs recipe contains sodium carbonate, citric acid, and essential oils. Why sodium carbonate? Sodium carbonate is chosen for water-softening purposes in this recipe. It is a dehydrated form of sodium bicarbonate. As sodium carbonate is water-soluble and magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate are insoluble, so it is used to soften water by removing Mg2+ and Ca2+. These ions form insoluble solid precipitates upon treatment with carbonate ions:
Plant Therapy) is to give your toilet a refreshing odor and eucalyptus essential oil has anti-microbial properties to keep your toilet bacteria-free each time you use it.
- 63% of sodium carbonate (not baking soda!!!)
- 32% of citric acid (Other DIY household hacks with citric acid, check this post)
- 2% of essential oils (Here I used Citrus Burst & eucalyptus essential oil)
- 3% of water
I understand that sodium carbonate is not readily available in most of the supermarkets, you can however make sodium carbonate from baking soda, check out how to do it here!

Ingredients
220g sodium carbonate
112g citric acid
4g peppermint essential oil
4g eucalyptus essential oil
10g water to mold
Directions
- Transfer sodium carbonate and citric acid into a bowl. then mix the powders using the spatula.
- Drips in essential oils. Mix well.
- Add water using a spray bottle. To do this, gently press twice (= double spray) on the water sprayer in order to moisten the powder, being very careful not to over-react the mixture. And mix.
- Repeat the double spray, mixing for several seconds between each double spray, until all the water is gone.
- Scoop one and press into your tablespoon (Here I used the kind of measuring tablespoon to mold, and to speed up I also use the silicone ice cube tray too.). Be sure there’s no air gap. Gently pop it out when it’s firm.
- Let all your little wonder bombs dried over parchment paper somewhere not reachable by your kids for 24hours. The garage is a good spot.
Notes
- These toilet bombs can be conserved for up to 3 months.
- Adding the water will, of course, start the reaction. This is why weāre using a spray bottleāto distribute the smallest amount of water over the largest area possible. Spritz and stir, spritz and stir. If it starts to fizzle, stir like mad to overwhelm the water with the dry mix. Every so often, grab a handful of the mixture and see if it will hold together. Donāt add too much water! If you do, theyāll react as they dry and use up all their fizz before you use it.
These homemade toilet cleaning bombs are efficient in water-softening and at the same time gives you that refreshing odour in your toilet. Molding it can be the trickier part. To save some time, you can also just let it in powder form and drop one scoop each time you needed it.
Enjoy the fizzling fun and bye bye hard water stain!
