Finally here’s come my first shampoo bar recipe! Shea butter & Coconut hair shampoo bar it is! In the quest of reducing household plastic waste, regardless of the fact that I don’t finish up my shampoo bottle that often (lazy hair-washer here, but hey, we are not supposed to wash our hair that often too), but still the contribution of the plastic waste is there. Making this recipe gives me a sense of satisfaction by creating a beauty product according to my own needs. It smells so good and so soothing. At the same time, it also protects my scalp in a gentle way.
Ingredients of DIY Shea Butter & Coconut Hair Shampoo Bar
- Shea Butter is the base of the recipe. It creates a creamy texture and at the same time provides plenty of nutritious components to the shampoo bar.
- Virgin Coconut Oil acts as an emollient in the recipe. It helps to moisturize your scalp in a gentle way.
- Sodium Coco Sulphate is a surfactant in this recipe. It is the main ingredient to make this recipe into a real shampoo. It helps to generate bubbles during washing.
- Silk Amino Acids (liquid) are key to hair growth and retention. Both L-Methionine and L-Cysteine are known to combat hair loss by supplying sulfur to the hair cells.
- Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil has been found in research to stimulate oil production in the skin and on the scalp. This is perfect for dry scalp. I also found its flora scent very calming and soothing.

7.5g Water
40 drops of Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil

- Off the heat, drips in the amino acid and Ylang-Ylang Essential oil.
- Mix the paste as homogenous as possible.
- Fill the mold with the hair shampoo paste, compact them with a metallic spoon.
- Let it cool in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes before unmolding it.
- Let your shampoo bar dry at room temperature at least 48 hours before using it.
Note & Tips
- If it’s possible, crush the mixture of coco sodium sulfate of step 2 in a mortar to form a paste mixture.
- Lightly oil your mold before putting your shampoo paste in it for taking out easier in the later stage.
- You will need to compact the paste into the mold with help of a metallic spoon at step 6. Leave no air gaps!
- Ylang Ylang Essential Oil can be replaced by the essential oil of your preference.
- You need a mask, gloves, and goggles because the surfactant may cause irritation.
